A car broken down on the side of the road with a caution signal

No one plans to break down on the side of the road, but it happens. From a dead battery to a flat tire, being prepared for the unexpected can make all the difference in a stressful situation. That's why every car should have a well-stocked emergency kit. We’ve compiled a list of things that you should include:

  • A First Aid Kit – a simple first aid kit can help keep minor situations from getting serious. You can purchase a ready-made first aid kit or create one yourself. Make sure it includes bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, gauze pads, adhesive tape, scissors, tweezers, sterile gloves, and instant cold packs.

  • Jumper Cables - A dead battery can leave you stranded, but jumper cables can help get you back on the road quickly. Ensure you know how to use them safely or have a quick guide stored with them.

Jump Start Kit jumper cables and tire inflate

While common jumper cables will require you to have another car available, you can also carry a Jump Start kid that would not require another vehicle to get you back on the road. The STANLEY J5C09 Portable Power Station Jump Starter is a great value around $100 that can instantly jump start your car, inflate low-pressure tires, provide a flashlight in the dark, and charge electronic devices.

  • Road Flares or Reflective Triangle - If you break down at night or in poor visibility conditions, road flares or reflective triangles can alert other drivers to your presence and prevent accidents. Place them a good distance behind your vehicle to provide adequate warning.

  • Flashlight and Batteries - A reliable flashlight is crucial for nighttime emergencies or when inspecting your car in the dark. Make sure to check the batteries regularly and keep spares on hand.

Tire repair kit
  • Tire Repair Kit and Tools – A flat tire is a common occurrence on the road. Having the right tools available can help get you to your destination without much delay. Make sure your spare tire is kept inflated and you have a jack and lug wrench available. Familiarize yourself with the process of changing a tire. It may also help to have an emergency tire inflator and sealant and tire pressure gauge as well.

  • Basic Tool Kit – A basic tool kit of wrenches, pliers, and screwdrivers can help with minor repairs. Also consider including a multi-tool or pocket knife, duct tape, electrical tape, and socket set. Even if you are unfamiliar with automotive repairs, having them on hand can be helpful should a knowledgable good Samaritan stop to help you.

  • Basic Survival Items – If you ever travel in remote areas, it is possible you could be stranded for hours at a time. Make sure to pack bottled water and non-perishable food, like energy bars. A blanket, heavy jacket or sweatshirt, hat and gloves, and ice scraper should also be included if cold weather is possible.

  • Odds and Ends – There are many situations you can’t predict. The following items might come in handy and should be considered as well for inclusion: phone charger/cord, cash and coins, physical map of the areas you travel, automotive fire extinguisher, rain poncho, emergency blanket, and emergency whistle.

Remember, a little preparation can go a long way in keeping you and your passengers safe. Safe driving!
